The Current State of Discussion and the Relevance of Antonovsky´s Salutogenic Model of Health

Inhalt/Abstract

The salutogenic model developed by Aaron Antonovsky is encountering growing interest, particularly among health promotion professionals. Consequently, the BZgA commissioned an expert report which was to discuss the relevance of the salutogenic model and its potential consequences for health promotion practice as a way of determining the benefits of this concept for health promotion.

The results of this expert report are presented in this issue. The authors present the salutogenic concept, explain its origin and background and compare it with related concepts. They also elucidate the current status of empirical research and illustrate the importance and utilisation of the concept in various fields of application. Finally, a summary assesses the professional debate, the relevance and utilisation of the concept, as well as formulating recommendations. In addition to an extensive bibliography, this issue also contains a comprehensive overview of the studies on the sense of coherence performed to date.
