World Health Organization (WHO)

The fundamental objectives of the BZgA in connection with health promotion and prevention are geared to the WHO documents Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion and Jakarta Declaration on Leading Health Promotion into the 21st Century. Links:

The BZgA was designated a WHO Collaborating Centre for sexual and reproductive health in 2003. In addition to general health promotion subjects, other key topics are quality assurance in HIV prevention and the reduction of health inequalities.

Together with other European countries, the BZgA cooperates on projects funded by the EU Commission, particularly by the Directorate General for Health and Consumer Protection.

In its capacity as a "competent body for communication - public campaigns", it additionally advises the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), a Stockholm-based EU institution for the prevention and control of infectious diseases.
In the field of prevention, BZgA acts as one of the three focal points in Germany for the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA).

The BZgA is a partner organisation in EuroHealthNet, the Brussels-based European network of health promotion organisations.
EuroHealthNet is open to members and partners bearing public responsibility for health promotion and prevention. At the moment, 33 partner organisations from 26 EU Member States cooperate in this network. The Federal Centre for Health Education (BZgA) has been a member of the network from the outset and participates in mostly EU-funded projects on various topics, such as the reduction of social inequalities in health.

The International Union for Health Promotion and Education (IUHPE) was founded in Paris in 1951 in order to promote the international exchange of effective approaches in health promotion. In recent years, the worldwide work of the IUHPE as a professional association has made an essential contribution to the development of scientifically sound health promotion, and to the professionalisation of this field of work in Europe. Health Promotion Switzerland (Stiftung Gesundheitsförderung Schweiz), the Fund for a Healthy Austria (Fonds Gesundes Österreich) and the Federal Centre for Health Education (BZgA) have declared their willingness to jointly support IUHPE activities in the German-speaking regions of Europe.

A Cooperation Agreement between the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ - German Agency for International Cooperation) and the Federal Centre for Health Education (BZgA) was signed in 2001. The BZgA supports the GIZ in developing concepts for health promotion projects in developing countries and Eastern European countries with special development requirements, particularly in HIV prevention, e.g. in the Ukraine.
